WFH Latin America strategy to be covered at CLAHT Congress

Next month, the CLAHT Group (Grupo Cooperativo Latinoamericano de Hemostasia y Trombosis) will hold its XXVII International Congress of Haemostasis and Thrombosis from August 18 to 21, 2021 in Colombia. The event will cover the latest developments in the field of bleeding disorders care for South and Central America. On August 19 at the congress, the WFH will be holding a half-day symposium which will explore how the federation’s strategies will be implemented in Latin America.

The symposium—which will start at 14:00 COT (3:00 p.m. EST)—will be hosted by senior WFH leaders Cesar Garrido, President; Glenn Pierce, MD, PhD, Vice-President, Medical; Miguel Escobar, Medical Member; and Assad E. Haffar, MD, Medical & Humanitarian Aid Director. Summit participants can expect to learn about the:

  • World Bleeding Disorders Registry (WBDR) and the Gene Therapy Registry (GTR)
  • Value of prophylaxis and multidisciplinary care in the comprehensive care model
  • Importance of advocacy by patient organizations
  • Recent developments in care and support for women and girls with bleeding disorders (topics will include living with inherited bleeding disorders such as von Willebrand disease (VWD), the genetic diagnosis of carriers and counseling, the psychosocial aspects of inherited bleeding disorders in women, and the obstetrician/gynecologist’s role in comprehensive care)
  • WFH Humanitarian Aid Program and the benefits of low-dose prophylaxis and prophylaxis with extended half-life products
  • Medical perspectives on hemophilia management with non-replacement therapies
  • Gene therapy case studies from Brazil

The session will also include a round table discussion on achieving “Treatment for All” in Latin America. Major talks will be followed by Q&A periods. Simultaneous interpretation of the entire congress will be offered in English and Portuguese.
